The Struggle with Why: Grappling with the Purpose of Suffering in Our Lives

Suffering can feel senseless. It’s the kind of pain that shakes you to your core, leaving you with more questions than answers. Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does God allow us to go through such devastating struggles? These questions often have no easy answers, and the answers we do find may not always offer the comfort we expect. I know because I’ve asked them too—during the loss of a loved one, when facing personal struggles, and when the pain seems endless. At times, the search for the "why" can feel more like a burden than a relief. We live in a world where suffering exists, and sometimes it feels like God is either too distant or too silent. There are moments when you feel completely abandoned by the One who is supposed to be your comfort. This is where the philosophical struggle begins: Why does God allow suffering in the first place? Why does He let it unfold in our lives, causing pain that seems pointless? But perhaps the question shouldn’t only be about the pain itself but about what God desires for us in the pain. Maybe suffering has a deeper purpose that we can’t fully understand. Perhaps it’s in these moments that we are drawn closer to God, even if it doesn’t feel like it. Suffering challenges us to look beyond the pain and to consider how it might shape us and deepen our relationship with God. It pushes us to reflect on the fallen nature of our world and the reality of a broken existence that sin has brought about. Wrestling with the "Why": Sometimes, the question of "Why?" doesn’t have an answer that feels satisfying or complete. The "why" often remains elusive because we’re looking for an explanation that makes everything better, that takes away the pain. But real growth in faith comes when we choose to sit with the question without expecting a neat and tidy answer. It’s in the brokenness, the questions, and the wrestling that we can begin to experience the love and presence of God in a way we never would if everything were easy.
